With the GPS set on avoid tolls, we hit a hitch within 5 minutes as we ventured down a tiny road with lots of signs in French (what are the odds). I believe the signs told us the road was closed.
A quick GPS adjustment to pay tolls and we were on our way down highways, tiny roads and, in some instances, the same road four times as Google maps did not know how to get us from stop 1 to stop 2.
First stop, Pointe du Hoc, was part of the site of the Normandy landings in WW2. The German cement bunkers and cannons that could fire 27 km into the ocean were still there, and bombing craters left by the allies weeks before D day were still there. Now I have to watch 'The Longest Day' to see how it all played out and perhaps understand.
The next stop was Omaha Beach, with a seaside monument and sculpture, 'Les Braves'. Annette took photos while I sat in the car so we didn't have to pay for parking.
Stop 3 was Longues-sur-Mer to see more German artillery bunkers (Mark's memory has blacked out here but I have photographic evidence).
Google, as stated, couldn't get its head around a road that was closed, so we kept doing the same loop until we decided our next stop was cancelled.
From there it was to another small town (Bayeux) with the usual suspects (church etc).
Annette visited a museum displaying the Bayeux Tapestry while I sat down on a bench to recover from the driving experience.
Annette's report: The Bayeux Tapestry is actually an embroidery (so who called it a tapestry?) that's 20 m long and tells the story of how William the Conquerer became king, in 1066. It includes a depiction of Halley's comet. Unfortunately photos of the tapestry were not allowed but I took these ones in the museum.
Then it was back in the car for more driving and my first little town with lots of streets adventure.
We were lucky enough to find our accommodation street, get a park nearby and sit down for a bit.
Carrefour (our favourite supermarket) for supplies, cook dinner, and there it was, my umpteenth birthday spent in summer on the other side of the world. No free dinners at Sporties and no free Hungry Jacks present in my birthday month as I won't be there all month. Sigh. But we did buy icecream.
??? Where do the golf clubs go?
